Raising Emergency Preparedness and Response Quotients: Oilfields go Digital

Emergency Preparedness and Response Survey

It is said that prevention is better than cure. But one can only prevent something that is expected. What happens when disasters like the above surface out of nowhere? Oil rig explosions usually occur without warning, and the effects linger for years. The Macondo oil spill continued unabated for 3 months in 2010 and the oil may still be seeping into the waters. After the Macondo incident, US regulatory authorities completely shutdown drilling in the Gulf of Mexico area, until the Oil and Gas industry could prove its ability to prevent and tackle such issues in future. Leading players of the Oil and Gas sector, such as Shell, BP, Chevron, Anadarko, ExxonMobil, Hess, and many others, then formed the Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC). The aim of the MWCC was to ensure realtime prevention and impact control so that the Oil and Gas sector was better prepared for such incidents.
